What is Fish Oil Good For?

Ain’t no fishy business going on here! Fish oil refers to the oil extracted from the fatty tissues of fish.

Contrary to popular misconception, fish oil supplements do not have any fishy smell or taste whatsoever. They’re odourless and tasteless, and packaged in a nifty little capsule for easy swallowing. Plus, they’re really good for you!

1. Contains Omega-3 fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are the star of the show here. But what exactly are they? In a nutshell, they’re a type of polyunsaturated fats that can be found in certain foods. There are three types of Omega-3 fatty acids, two of which (DHA and EPA) are found in fish and seafood. Unfortunately, the body is unable to make Omega-3 fatty acids — meaning that we can only get these babies from the food that we consume.

However, food allergies may prevent individuals from consuming enough fish and seafood. Some people may also shy away from eating fish due to the high levels of mercury. Luckily, mercury is more or less removed from fish oil when it’s made into supplements. Our fish oil supplements are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, making them wonderful for your body!

2. Improves brain function

The DHA and EPA Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for cognitive function and brain development. Indeed, according to a 2023 study, it’s said that Omega-3 supplements may help to reduce the risk of dementia onset and other age-related cognitive decline by up to 20%!

3. Boosts mental health

Happier body, happier you, are we right? Fish oil is also said to reduce depression and alleviate anxiety.

4. Creates healthy joints

Fish oil contains anti-oxidants that have anti-inflammatory properties. This will help with painful conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

5. Promotes healthy heart

Let’s break it down. DHA helps to reduce triglyceride (a type of fat) levels, improve cholesterol, and lower blood pressure. EPA is required for the production of prostaglandins, which helps to control blood clotting.

6. Great for eye health

DHA is a major component of the retina’s structure. Fish oil adds to the high concentration of DHA in the retina, which helps to maintain good vision. Insufficient levels of DHA might result in macular degeneration which can, in turn, lead to eye damage and even blindness.

7. Supports pregnancy

Fish oil is great for your foetus’ early growth, especially in the first trimester. In fact, it’s claimed that fish oil can help improve your child’s cognitive development!

8. Elevates cognitive function

Struggling to concentrate at work? Fish oil supplements may be a total lifesaver in helping to improve memory and boost concentration.

9. Fosters healthy skin complexion

Fish oil — and the Omega-3 fatty acids it contains! — helps to maintain skin hydration and integrity by reducing overall dryness, giving the skin a nice healthy glow.

10. Eases menstrual pains

All you women who have horrible cramps every month, this one is for you. Previous trials have found Omega-3 fatty acids to help ease menstrual pains due to its anti-inflammatory properties. The results have yet to be cemented but hey, when we’re hunched over in pain, we’ll try anything!
